me
I live and paint on outer Cape Cod and in the Berkshires, reflecting each moment that is all moments within a universe of constant change. I use a visual language evolved from shells, seaweed, stones, bones, trees, water and clouds to connect to the world and to express myself. I am also an herbalist, a nurse and a parent who returned to an earnest painting practice in 2002. I have degrees in art and art history from Cornell University (1990). I have been represented by the wonderful Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, MA since 2010.
my process
I channel energy through me and into my work in the required variable proportions of curiosity, expansiveness, tenderness, patience, fierceness and fluidity. I let the process flow through me staying open to whatever unfolds. I paint with oils on canvas, linen or panel, layering and building color and texture and then feeling for shape and form. My work embraces the push and pull between representation and abstraction and blends careful observation with emotional expression. Each layer surrenders to experience that is always changing.
my inspiration
The shifts and shimmers of nature’s transition zones, where land meets water, forests melt into shadow and magic twists perception - those are the places from which I draw my inspiration. Here, moments of sharp clarity are balanced by ephemeral glimpses of water sprites, fairies and sparkling divinity. Shells have always delighted me in the way their smooth jewel-like interiors contradict their humble exteriors and origins. I also love to play with scale where pebbles and shells become large landscapes, and forests and oceans fit within cupped hands.
